United Way of Central Maryland is expanding an initiative aimed at stemming school dropout rates after seeing success with the program during its trial year.

he Baltimore City schools system has signed an agreement with the state's Department of Education for the state to specially train principals at the city's failing schools.

Increasingly, two-year colleges are adding a third leg to their stools aimed at building more socially aware citizens through civic engagement programs that combine elements of community service and getting involved in the democratic process with classroom reflection that distills and solidifies the lessons learned.

The Maryland State Department of Education will target principals in Baltimore for leadership training in a bid to turn around some of the city’s struggling schools, state and city officials said.

A new initiative in Montgomery County is geared at combating bullying in schools by having students notify authorities about the problem through texting. 

In four years, number of students with access to high-speed internet has increased tenfold.

A senior at Pike County’s Belfry High School said the upgrades in technology made at his school and others in the region “will change the outlook for us in Eastern Kentucky.”
