After sharing federal updates, the series features lessons learned and best practices from faculty, staff, schools, districts, institutions of higher education, and other places of educational instruction. It also shares a variety of useful resources.   On behalf of the U.S. Department of Education, Office of Elementary and Secondary Education’s Office of Safe and Supportive Schools, the National Center on Safe Supportive Learning Environments (NCSSLE) invites you to join our next webinar, Developing High-Quality Registered Apprenticeship Programs to Address Teacher Shortages: National Guidelines for Apprenticeship Standards.  Wednesday, August 16, 2023  3:00 – 4:30 pm ET  Registered Apprenticeships are a valuable tool in addressing the teacher shortage. These programs can be an effective, high-quality “earn and learn” model that allows candidates to earn their teaching credential through structured, paid on-the-job learning experiences with a mentor, combined with coursework, and can be used to bring to the table additional resources to support the expansion of residency and Grow-Your-Own programs. By reducing the cost of earning a license and offering flexible scheduling, these programs open the doors to the profession to those who may otherwise face barriers, including teachers of color and individuals such as paraprofessionals who may already have decades of experience in the classroom, but previously could not afford to become a teacher. During this webinar, speakers will share information on the newly approved National Guidelines for Apprenticeship Standards (NGS) for Registered Apprenticeship Programs for K-12 Teachers, which were announced on July 27, 2023 at a joint U.S. Department of Education and Department of Labor event. For more information on that event, see here. NGS provide a quality framework for states creating a Registered Apprenticeship Program for K-12 teachers. While voluntary, the NGS can provide a pathway for expedited approval of the teacher apprenticeship model, helping states, districts, institutions of higher education, and other apprenticeship sponsors align their programs to quality standards that meet federal requirements for Registered Apprenticeship Programs. To learn more about the NGS in advance of the webinar, see these resources from the Pathways Alliance. The NGS were drafted by the Pathways Alliance, which includes a cross-section of leading education organizations, including the American Association of Colleges for Teacher Education (AACTE), National Education Association (NEA), American Federation of Teachers (AFT), Learning Policy Institute, National Association of Workforce Boards, National Center for Grow Your Own, National Center for Teacher Residencies, Arizona State University (ASU), Cooperative Educational Service Agency 6 (CESA6), Deans for Impact, InnovateEDU, Inspire Texas, Prepared To Teach, Substantial, and TeachMe Education.  Speakers Erin Mote, Executive Director and Co-Founder, InnovateEDU  Megan Baird, Deputy Administrator, Office of Apprenticeship, U.S. Department of Labor  Panelists Laurie Matzke, Assistant State Superintendent, North Dakota Department of Public Instruction  Dr. Lisa Barron, Assistant Dean, Professor, Director of Teacher Education and Partnerships, Eriksson College of Education, Austin Peay State University, TN  Dr. Prentice Chandler, Dean, Eriksson College of Education, Austin Peay State University, TN  Colleen McDonald, Executive Director, TEACHMEducation Services, LLC, Director, New York State Educator Workforce Development HUB, NY  Webinar Materials Speaker bios Slides Recording (Coming soon on August 17) Transcript (Coming soon on August 18) Resources National Guidelines for Registered Apprenticeship Standards for K-12 Teachers (see 2023-118) Pathways Alliance Resources U.S. Department of Labor Educator Apprenticeship Page FACT SHEET: Biden-Harris Administration Announces Public and Private Sector Actions to Strengthen Teaching Profession and Help Schools Fill Vacancies (The White House) Scaling the Teacher Pipeline and Career Pathways (DOL) August 31, 2022 -- Joint Letter with Secretary Martin Walsh of DOL regarding a Sustainable Teacher Workforce (ed.gov) Dear Colleague Letter: Guidance on Carl D.
