Prescription Opioids in Adolescence and Future Opioid Misuse

Analyzes data from the Monitoring the Future study to determine risk and protective factors for prescription drug abuse among high school adolescents. Results from a nationally representative sample of 6220 individuals indicate that use of prescribed opioids before 12th grade is associated with future opioid use, even among those students with strong disapproval of illegal drug use at baseline. Conclusions also indicate that clinic-based education and prevention efforts have substantial potential to reduce future opioid misuse among these individuals.
