The Office of Safe and Healthy Students hosted the first webinar of a series of webinars on the U.S. Department of Education’s recently issued “Non-Regulatory Guidance on the Student Support and Academic Enrichment (SSAE) Grants.” The SSAE program is authorized under Title IV, Part A of ESSA.

The Appendix of the Non-Regulatory Guidance lists many examples of resources that educators, parents, advocates, administrators, and others may find helpful, and use at their discretion, with respect to implementing the SSAE program..
During this webinar, David Esquith, Director of OSHS provided an introduction to the SSAE Non-Regulatory Guidance. Next, Paul Kesner, Group Leader of OSHS’s Safe Supportive Schools unit, provided an overview of (1) the role of the State Educational Agency; (2) local application requirements; and (3) implementing effective SSAE program activities. Then, OSHS program unit leaders-- Eve Birge, Bryan Williams, and Norris Dickard-- provided an overview of allowable activities to support well-rounded educational opportunities, safe and healthy students, and effective use of technology.
