Veterans are particularly at risk for mental health issues, experiencing depression, post-traumatic stress disorder, and dying by suicide at significantly higher rates than the general population. They are also vulnerable to social disconnection, due to both difficulty reacclimating to civilian life and widespread perceptions among civilians that veterans have little in common with them.

For one student, it’s the time spent walking an hour each way to campus. For another without a reliable ride, it’s the stress and expense of getting to class for a big exam.

As we enter another graduation season, Historically Black Colleges and Universities are working hard to increase the number of students who walk across their stages in the years to come. One program is doing that by focusing on reenrollment and giving students access to one-on-one educational support. Hari Sreenivasan reports from Atlanta for our series, Rethinking College.

On May 5, Perimeter College graduated its first class of students who earned their associate’s degrees while incarcerated, part of Georgia State University’s Prison Education Project. The nine graduates from Walker State Prison in Rock Spring earned their degrees in general studies, taking classes in a variety of subjects. According to the college, three graduated with GPAs above 3.9 and the rest were above 3.7.

The U.S. Department of Education's Office for Civil Rights (OCR) issued a resolution agreement with Forsyth County Schools (district) in Georgia concerning whether the removal of books from its school libraries created a hostile environment for students based on sex, race, color, or national origin under Title IX of the Education Amendments of 1972 and Title VI of the Civil Rights Act of 1964.

Augusta University will increase its mentorship offerings for incoming students this fall with the help of several hundred undergraduate and graduate student mentors.
