The U.S. Department of Education and other federal agencies administer mandates under six acts of Congress that require virtually all IHEs to undertake and document various activities in their policymaking, planning, and reporting. Complying with the spirit and not just the letter of the law supports IHEs in promoting a safe and supportive learning environment because the goals are mutually supportive.

Institutionalizing the Clery Act at Institutions of Higher Education: Findings of a Focus Group of College and University Compliance Executives

Summarizes findings from a focus group with nineteen public safety and compliance executives from eight institutions of higher education (IHEs) and nine professional associations. The goal of the focus group was to help IHEs develop their cultures to manage compliance with the Clery Act from an institution-wide team approach, rather than something sequestered to a few compliance professionals at each IHE.
